Want to study in Australia? Apply for these Scholarships

by Pritika Ghura

While studying in Australia is affordable than compared to studying in the USA or UK, the Australian government offers plethora of scholarships to international students. Many education institutions and a number of other organisations also award scholarships to deserving students. They cover various educational sectors, including vocational education and training, student exchanges, undergraduate and postgraduate study and research. Australian Government scholarships are not available for international students undertaking English language training specifically in Australia. However, there are several English language training scholarships offered by Australian institutions.

There are two types of scholarships awarded to international students. The Australia Awards are comprised of two streams: an achievement stream that targets the best and brightest students, researchers and professionals from across the globe to come to Australia and for Australians to do the same offshore; and a development stream that builds capacity in developing countries.

The Australia Awards brings the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) scholarships together under the Australia Awards program. There are three programs available under the Australia Awards-:

  1. Endeavour Awards: If you’re from Asia-Pacific, America, Europe or Middle East and have an exceptional academic background, you can avail Endeavour Award. This is the Australian Government’s internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program to encourage bright students to study or research in Australia.
  2. Australian Development Scholarships (ADS): ADS provides students coming to the country with the necessary skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes of their own country, through obtaining tertiary qualifications at participating Australian institutions. The main aim to impart this scholarship is to contribute to the long-term development needs of Australia’s partner nations to promote good governance, economic growth and human development.
  3. Australian Leadership Awards (ALA): This is especially designed for students of Asia Pacific. ALAs provide scholarship support for postgraduate studies in Australia and short-term fellowship opportunities in specialised research, study or professional attachments through participating Australian organisations.

Besides these there are several international and charitable organisations that offer scholarships for deserving international students. You must apply for these scholarships in your home country, not in Australia.
